Massage therapy is a regulated health profession in British Columbia. Under the Health Professions and Occupations Act, in force since April 1, 2026, "massage therapist" and "massage practitioner" are protected titles that only licensees of the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC) may use. The College confirms licensed massage therapists can still call themselves registered massage therapists (RMTs).
Explain fees before providing a service; take your health history; explain the proposed treatment, its expected benefits, risks and alternatives, and have you sign a consent form before the first treatment; respect your clothing and draping preferences and uncover only the area being treated; and accept that you can change or withdraw consent at any time. Receipts must show the practitioner's name and licence number - see massage and acupuncture coverage in BC.
